Laggan Forest Trust Forest Company

The Forest Company

This is the Trading Company of the Laggan Forest Trust formed to carry out the detailed management of operations involved in the partnership between Laggan Forest Trust and the Forestry Commission. It has taken over the duties of the Laggan Forestry Initiative which until 1988 acted for the community in negotiations and discussions with the Forestry Commission to develop a pilot project for Community Forest Partnerships.

The main objectives of the Laggan Forest Company are

  •  Setting up and Managing the projects.
  •  Liasing with the Laggan Forest Trust.
  •  Management of the Partnership with the Forestry Commission.
  •  Business planning
  •  Design Planning

Fiona Dodds (Company Secretary) worked for 17 years in the insurance industry, her last position was as a Senior Technical Underwriter. She held  Dip CII status from the Chartered Insurance Institute before leaving the industry to live in the Highlands. She now runs a small Bed & Breakfast with her husband and provides secretarial support to him in is role as Chair as well as taking on the duties of Company Secretary. Her interests include history and the environment.

 

James Macdonald (Director Laggan Forest Trust Forestry Company) left for Newfoundland and Canada aged 21, finally settling at Saint John, Newfoundland. He started a mortgage brokerage, mainly utilising Scots insurance companies. He purchased 60 acres of suburban land, and build roads, services and 42 houses and 5 apartment homes. Within the City he built an office building and purchased and renovated older buildings. He returned to the Highlands and purchased and managed a small hotel which he quadrupled the turnover of. 10 years later he retired, his interests are Highland history, genealogy, village affairs and environment. He has just become a Trustee.

 

Jim Langley – (Director Laggan Forest Trust Forestry Company) – took early retirement in January 2002 from a lifetime with the Royal Shakespear Company, at the age of 55. Over a career spanning 38 year he held various stage administration positions but from 1978 until retirement held the position of Production Controller. His responsibilities ranged from control of all production and technical facilities, which included production management, manufacturing departments and stage technical departments for the 5 resident theatres spread across Stratford and London. He was the administration for a staff of over 200 and managed a budget in excess of £2M. He is currently an un-paid Director of LFTFC assisting with the development and delivery of projects.

Environmental Statement

Laggan Forest Trust is a registered charity created to conserve, regenerate and promote restoration of native and other woodlands, to maintain, improve and extend paths within and linking such woodlands within the geographical region of Laggan. To foster and develop community participation in woodland activities and support local and national initiatives which aim to extend native woodlands significantly within Scotland by improving the cultural, educational and recreational aspects of native woodlands. To increase sustainable economic use of the woodlands for the benefit of the community, and to develop and nurture interest in the woodland environment as a sustainable resource for now and the future.

The responsibility for managing, maintaining and the general implementation lies with the board of the Laggan Forest Trust.

Laggan Forest Trust is an environmentally conscious and responsibe group. To carry out this commitment, it is the Trust's policy to strive to ensure that all aspects of any activities or projects have the least harmful effect on the environment by implementing an environmental management system.

1. To be fully aware of all environmental legislation and ensure that regulatory requiements are met and, where feasible, improve upon.

2. To consider all the impacts of its activities on the environment and to adopt cost effective practices that eliminate or minimise negative environmental impacts.

3. To define, prioritise and mitigate existing environmental problems.

4. To manage projects in a way that conserves natural resources, prevents pollution and is protective of the environment.

5. To use renewable energy resources wherever practicable.

6. To anticipate and address potential future environmental problems before they pose a threat.

7. To keep waste production to a minimum, recycle and reuse, and search for, new ways to reduce waste.

8. To review this policy annually.
